Rugby Super League in the Pyrenees Orientales
We could be considered the Rugby capital of France! Not only do we have the Rugby Union team USAP who play in the Heineken Cup but also the Rugby league team, the Perpignan Dragons who are now the only French team playing in the English ‘Super League’. Rugby has always flourished here in the Southern rural areas since being introduced to France in 1870 by the British.
Rugby league was introduced into France in the 1930s and became an alternative to Rugby Union here after France was suspended from playing other nations when they were in breach of amateur regulations.
A driving force in the introduction of Rugby league here in France was Jean Gallia a talented player, of the time, from Ille sur Tet. The Sports stadium here in Ille-Sur-tet is named after him. (Our son plays there for the Cadet Rugby League team).
In addition to Ryanair flights into Perpignan, it has made it easier for supporters of both sorts of Rugby to come and watch games here in Perpignan since BMIBaby have introduced flights between Manchester and Perpignan.
