April 2011

We had a lovely time walking, exploring and discovering the natural history – not so much time seeing the sights because we’ve been in this part of France several times. We are biologists so we spent a lot of time taking photos, birding, looking at insects and plants.
Best day: Val D’Eyne – moufflon, chamonix, fox, marmots, flowers, high alpine
Learned the most: Visiting Cathar castles Queribus and peyrepertueuse and thinking about man’s inhumanity to man.
Best birding: Aiguemolls, Val D’Eyne, Lac Villeneuve, Etang Le Canet, Gorge.
Best restaurant: Auberge St Paul, Place de L’Eglise, Villefranche-de-Conflent.
Bets wine store : Goûts et arômes, 30 Rue Jean Jaures, Prades.
Best market : Prades
Best bread : Boulanger Eric, Prades market.
Best local cheese: right beside a guy selling olives who is beside Eric.
Overall a fantastic relaxing holiday with terrific biodiversity, Friendly and knowledgeable hosts, great accommodation.

May 2006 (Gite)

When your hosts welcome you on a hot Saturday afternoon with a cold beer, you just know you’ve come to the right place! After a 900 mile journey in 2 days, it took us a couple of days to unwind – which we did in the conservatory, reading books in the sunshine. Some ‘must do’ things while visiting the fab area include Montsegur, Gorges de St George, Collioure ( which has an amazing epicerie). Figueres in Spain, Eus, Carcassonne, Villefranche-de-Conflent, Chateau Queribus and Foix. We also did a great walk in the surrounding hills of Rodes even in the pouring rain and getting a bit lost. we still had a great time. The local restaurant in the village does some great duck and if you’re in to foie gras, try some with some local Muscat de Rivesaltes – Yum! Last but by no means least try La Meridienne restaurant in Prades, amazing Catalan food and of course wines. We’ll be back!! Claire and Jeroen

Had a lovely week. It’s a great base from which to see the treasures of the area

A beautiful house in a superb location. Very peaceful and relaxing. Highlights included ‘The Yellow Train’, the caves and Eus. Also the restaurant across the road has brilliant food and lovely staff. Thanks to Steve and Jolanta for this wonderful place to stay, feels like home! Xx

June 2010

After many holidays with Chez Nous we have to say this is the best accommodation so far. Very spacious, comfortable and clean plus the wonderful pool. Steve and Jolanta are excellent hosts so friendly and helpful in every way. They even took us with them to the mudsummer celebrations in the village. Afine insight into French village life. Although we had some rainy days our first week still able to ejoy some of the amazing sights in the area. Peyrepertuse in the wind and rain was certainly memorable! Like many other writers we loved Villefranche-de-Conflent, the walk up to Fort Liberia and the thousand stirs descent is amazing. Further away but still worth the journey are the Gorges if the fou, near Arles sur Tech. More than a mile of metal walkways through a very narrow gorge with gushing water below. Incredible! So many places too numerous to mention here. Thanks to Steve + Jolanta for a wonderful holiday.
Chris, Carol, Melissa and Tom – Hull

June 2008

Our thanks for a most enjoyable holiday. Excellent accommodation/ particularily enjoyed our visits to St Cyprien (Lovely walks along a nice sandy beach and clear sea) – a little down the coast to Collioure to a seaside town/beach and then out to Port vendres. Both Collioure and PV have plenty of exciting places for a nice lunch. We found the N116 after Villefrache rather twisting and difficult up to Mont Louis and having got there, somewhat disappointing with ML. Wanted to do the ‘Yellow Train’ but time didn’t allow. We have appreciated the help and guidance rcvd from Steve and Jol and would certainly recommend and return a visit. Many Thanks

June 2007 (Gite)
A big thank you to Steve and Jolanta for making us feel welcome. An enjoyable 2 weeks had by all. Enjoyed the beaches at Argeles and Canet. Roses in Spain was lovely - worth the trip – beer cheaper too!! The little yellow train – scenery was lovely but very disappointing in Mont Louis – Be prepared if you do visit take food and drink – we were stuck there for 4 hours without a drink or anywhere to eat. Thanks again

“I like the pool very much. I was in it every day. I was with Nanny, Pappy, Auntie Jackie, Uncle Brian. Thank you very much – Jaimie”

A lovely cool gite and an ideal base to see the surrounding area. The ‘yellow train’ and a trip to Andorra were highlights. - A superb week in a beautiful location

We have had a wonderful relaxing holiday. The scenery is stunning, everyone is so friendly and the wines and food of this region have been fantastic. The gite and the swimming poll have been perfect. Jolanta, Steve and Mathew have been so hospitable and their knowledge of this area has really enhanced our holiday. There is something for everyone in this part if France and we take home many happy memories.

July 2011

We enjoyed the house and lovely pool very much – despite the awful, cold wondy, grey weather – we thought the South of France in July would be sunny!! Highlights were the ‘son et lumiere’ at ‘ The Grand Canalettes(caves)’ , our day in Carcassone and the Orgues. Also Castelnou was excellent – lovely wine. Lowlights were the weather and our visit to Perpignana which is sleazy, expensive and slightly scary! (The palace was good though). Thanks for the warm welcome despite our very late arrival due to car problems. We would love to come back.
Stephen, Marianne, Arwen and Imogen – Ollaberry, Shetland

Wonderful holiday. Gite is perfect, large, coll and well-equipped. Steve and Jolanta so welcoming and helpful and knowledgeable.Particularily enjoyed walks around and above the village, Eus, Ceret – art gallery is fabulous- le Racou plage, yellow train- but do get an open carriage- and Villfranche. The kids loved Aqualand at St Cyprien although it was expensive. So much else we didn’t get to do this time – will have to return! Thanks for everything.
Teresa, Paul, Jack and Anna – London

July 2010

Had a great drive down via Dover Calais, Orleans and over magnificent ‘ Viaduc de Millau’. On arrival, we were made welcome by Steve and Jolanta. The pool was always a welcome feature but a walk through the village and down the gorge/canal. Follow the path to the end and up to the ruins on the hilltop. If you intend to walk in the hills, I suggest that you consult Stephen. Then you may not have to cross the river – between bridges!!! Do visit Villefranche – A great holiday.
Barrie, Christine, Debbie, Stephanie and Tom – Leeds

Wonderful two weeks. Great house. Great pool. Fantastic location. Lots of good markets. Great welcome – (lovely biscuits!). Would definitely return!
Thanks Jolanta + Steve a restful time after a busy year.

John, Anne, Hannah, Emily + Jean – Abbey St ledgers

Our second stay – Thanks very much! Fantastic weather and great gite again. Highlights were Prades market, Villefranche, Eus, Thursday night Perpignan music (you have to go) + meal at La Font Vella – brilliant hosts and lovely food as usual. We loved the pool and the sun – Thanks Steve and Jolanta x
Hugh, Barb, Elinor and Mari – Wales

Stayed for 2 weeks and what a wonderful 2 weeks we had. The gite was great and very spacious. Pool was great especially when temp reached 41!!!
Some of our favourite trips out were:- Grandes Canalettes – Grottes. Only went in one cave (there are 3) but it was beautiful. Then enjoyed and enjoyable stroll around Villefranche de Conflent. You must go if you like quaint shops in a medieval setting. Collioure is worth a visit ( Look out for park and ride otherwise get stressed looking for parking). Gorge de Galamus is an experience. Last night spent in St Cyprien very lively after the sun goes down. Shops, restaurants, fair, music + mini-golf. I could go on and on and on. We have found a small part of France that seems like paradise! Steve and Jolanta you are wonderful. Thanks ad keep up the good work x.
The gite is incredible, had an amazing 2 weeks here! I’m not going to forget this wonderful holiday. Thank you very much! You’re doing a good job!Flicking through the comments, I bet you’re proud of yourselves. Keep up the good work Steve and Jolanta x - Soph

July 2008

Thank you Jolanta and Steven for a warm welcome and a wonderful week in your lovely gite. We didn’t have enough time to visit all the sights and will hopefully return. The friendly service and the ’canard’ at the Font vella are recommended.
Faye, Brett, Bethany, Sue and Chris – Sussex

Had a brilliant week – best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in! Pool a massive plus – hardly needed any beach trips! Thursday night in Perpignan was great, worth the trip – though if possible don’t park in underground parking as they close at 11pm and we had to leave way bfore we wanted to. Tuesday market in Prades also worthwhile. It’s advisable to arrive very early for the 11:20 ‘yellow’ train as we were unable to get on as it was full on arrival. Bastille day celebrations in the village were great – we felt very welcomed by the locals which was lovely, as was the case in the village restaurant, very friendly and welcoming. Very nice to be around French people who speak back in French when our language efforts were made. Area, gite and hosts were brilliant, will deff be coming back! Thank you Steve + Jolanta!
Barbara, Hugh, Elinor and Mari – Wales

Palatial accommodation and a well–used pool was the basis for an excellent week. Thank you also for advice on local attractions. @Yellow train’ was the highlight. A great success.

Thank you for such a warm welcome on our arrival and your introduction to Rodes’ hidden gem – the walk along the gorge – It is something we will remember and talk about for a long time. This area of France has such a lot to offer – walks with breathtaking scenery, interesting historic villages and friendly welcome and of course a very inviting pool to cool off at the end of a hard day! With bets wishes Jolanta and Stephen
Fran and Derek – Brighton

We have enjoyed our stay so very much! This is a lovely house with a very friendly atmosphere, created by you, Jolanta and Stephen! We appreciate really your helpfulness in our searching for a house to buy – perhaps we’ll become your neighbours some day? We have fallen in love with this part of France! Thank you !

Really nice place. Had a very relaxing and peaceful week in the sun
The Bowe family

A really relaxing week – too hot to do anything much. The pool was a huge hit with the girls and the gite was well equipped and loads of space. Highlight was the ‘Rando Jazz’ night on Bastille day. The hike up to the quarry was well worth it for the laid back jazz and the wonderful view of Rodes and the mountains. We really appreciated the drink and food in the square afterwards and everyone was really friendly. Thanks to Jolanta and Steve for a great time. John, Cathy, Bethany and Katie

A very enjoyable week in a lovely area. An excellent gite, Very well equipped and cool despite the hot weather. Many thanks Steve and Jolanta for all your help

What can we say that hasn’t already been said? A lovely holiday house in a wonderful location. The young adults in our family particularily appreciated the wi-fi access in order that they could keep abreast of social developments back at home via facebook!
Thanks to steve and Jolanta for their warm welcome and helpful advice on the local area. PS anyone looking for a restaurant is well advised to visit the ‘Casa de Ram in Ille Sur tet. Though expensive, it is well worth the money
I wasn’t left room by the fam, but all was marv! Felt I needed a lilo to soak up the sun but had no case space, so enjoy! Don’t let a moment of this holiday pass you by.

August 2010

We had a super fortnight here in this spacious gite + the pool has been enjoyed by all of us especially by our 2 teenagers. Steve an Jolanta are very welcoming and friendly hosts – Steve especially so with Sophie by helping her with her WiFi access! Lovely area of France; Good birding for John! Enjoyed trips to Villefranche, Chateau Queribus, tropical golf at St Cyprien (dominic!) + of course the walks through Rodes to the gorge + canal up to the ruined chateau so have lots of happy memories. Thank you!
John, Kathryn, Sophie and Dominic – Chudleigh Knighton

We had a relaxing two weeks here in this wonderful gite. Thank you Steve and Yolanta for your wonderful welcome and hospitality and encouraging us to go to the paella night – we had a great time. Gite very comfortable and the swimming pool so refreshing and fun for the children. The scenery is so breath-taking. Lots of outdoor activities to do within easy reach. We hope to see you again. Thanks.

We’ve had a lovely few days here. Swimming, tennis, walking and eating delicious food outside under the pines. Loved looking up at canigou and walking the Gorges. Highly recommend restaurant “Meridienne” in Prades. Thank you Stephen and Jolanta
Sarah, Stephen, Louis and Ruben - Barcelona

A really warm welcome from Steve and Jolanta with a cold beer settled us in. You could probably spend a week wandering the little paths around the vllage. Bets trips – Wine tasting at Celliers des templiers in Banyuls sur mer – oay for the guided tour in English, Excellent. Stopped at Collioure on the way back for a swim. Villefranche-de-Conflent – individual shops and the walk along the ramparts – Also nearby vernet Les Bains – eat at Bistro Cortal, Vernet by the mairie. The Orgues at Ille Sur tet are surreal. Sadly the restaurant in the village was closed but had 2 really good meals in the restaurant literally 2 minutes straight across the N116. Steve and Jolanta know everything worth knowing about the area and are happy to share it with you. We had a brilliant time – Thank you. PS Do the Gorge walk.
Peter and Linda – Gloucestershire

2) Tubbing on the river at Marqixanes (just down the road)
3) Ramparts at Villefranche-de-Conflent (early start)

6) Rodes – Beautiful gorge – Bottom of village near bridge, turn right along canal, cross after 1 mile, right up path to castle and return – well worth the 1.5 hours.
7) Collioure (Be there for 9:30!)
8) Beaches – St Cyprien Plage + mini golf.
9) Orgues at Ille sur tet
10) Drive to belesta to Montalba(cave) –back via Trevillach and reservoir.

2 very enjoyable weeks are over – wish we were here for 4 weeks. Favourites are Leucate plage , Canet plage and the swimming pool at this gite.
Casa del Ram at Ille Sur tet provided a lovely meal on the last night – Nice tapas in the square with Jazz musicians in the background Final comment is reserved for our wonderful hosts: We had 1 week of B&B with Steve and Jolanta and another week in the gite – wonderful accommodation, meals and local information and advice. Best of all our 5 year old son loved going to tell them what he had been doing (and sharing his sweets)! An absolutely perfect holiday location – tell your friends – we will be doing the same! September 2011

Lovely lazy week in the hot sunshine. Thank you Steve and Jolanta for tea and beer on our arrival. We’ve been to a vide-grenier in Rodes (excellent lemon drizzle cake). Climbed up to the little romanesque chapel, walked over the dam, been to Eus, Marcevol and Prades. We had a day visiting ceret and Cllioure for some ary and swim in the sea. We went up to the chateau d’Aiguilar and back via the musee de la prehistorique at Tautavel (rather cerebral and no obvious car park). Next day we pottered round the market at Ille Sur tet and then drove up the N116 to Villefranche-de-Conflent for lunch and a walk round the ramparts – we couldn’t face the 100 + steps up to Fort Liberia. We returned the following day to go further up into the mountains to Mont Louis and an excellent demonstration of the Solar oven – car park again hard to find. It we had had time we would have liked to ride on the ‘le petit train jaune’ – it looks well worth it. However we stayed nearer home on our last day and went to the Prory of Serrabonne and Castelnou. Really sad to leave.
Nicky and Tony - Salisbury

September 2010

Enjoyed a relaxing stay in very comfortable and spacious gite. Welcomed with refreshing cup of tea after slightly hair-raising drive (from the passenger’s point of view!) over the mountain roads from Lourdes. Everything is green here thanks to the trees. Buildings and ’feel’ of the area is definitely more Spanish/Catalan than French. Local highlights for us were similar to other guests – Villefranche-de-Conflentt, carcassonne, Verner-Les-Bains, St Thomas-Les-bains, Collioure and Port Vendres. Due to being partly wheelchair-bound, could not do the Gorges etc, somewhat to our embarrassment because this wa a holiday in France. Our particular favourite part of our stay was in Barcelona, middle Fr – Sun. 2.5 hrs drive, it is a busy vibrant city. Managed to get a ticket to match at Nou Camp – only pity Barca lost for 1st time in over a year! Favourite meal out was lunch at harbourside bar/restaurant in Port vendres – L’abri Cotier – get set seafood meal for 2 fantastic! Thanks to Jolanta and Steve

September 2009

A very enjoyable week spent in this lovely part of France. Weather was favourable and spent a fair bit of time in pool which was great. Went out and about most days and loved Villfranche-de-Conflent and Ceret. Went to the Dali museum in Figueres, which is highly recommended, although parking proved a bit difficult. Many thanks to Steve and Jolanta for providing us with a lovely holiday
